The perimeter layer of a network starts with established outside connection and ends with access to a private network. Outside connections can be established by an Internet service provider. The network perimeter can be comprised of devices that block unwanted traffic, allow remote access, filter for impending dangerous content, and detect or block apparent attacks. A private network will have many threats because of the need to establish connections with other networks, especially Internet. Therefore it is important to understand what the private network faces in order to properly design the perimeter protection for business.
When properly configured, the perimeter defences only permit those activities that are required to conduct business. Using the perimeter defence security model, the perimeter technology prevents, absorbs or detects attacks, reducing the risk of critical back-end systems in such way.
General acceptance of such perimeter defence model has occurred because it is much easier to secure a large volume of applications or a large number of internal networks. Business is also attracted by its lower cost.
Businesses spend millions of dollars securing a battery of applications without paying right attention to the back-end infrastructure. Meanwhile spending thousands of dollars per year on securing one perimeter instead shall be an attractive alternative for those who are seeking high level security and cost efficiency at once. Perimeter defence is a rather tactical cost decision.
